A Unique Wine Experience

Nov. 8-9, 2008

Greetings!

"More than twice the size as neighboring Napa, Sonoma County overflows with wineries and grape varieties. Within this appellation's one million total acres, over 250 wineries make their home. Practically every variety of grape grown in California can be found somewhere in Sonoma County. Winemaking here is steeped in history, going back to the 1820s. Diverse in its climate, soils, geography and grapes, the patchwork quilt that is Sonoma County is America's viticultural cornucopia!

American Viticultural Areas or AVAs are geographic locations that have the same climate, soil, and elevation and similar properties that give the wine a certain characteristic. Sonoma is divided into 13 AVAs. We will be visiting wineries in the following 5 AVAs: Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley, Chalk Hill, and Green Valley where we will have a chance to taste some of the finest Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, as well as some sparkling wines."

What you just read is from my friend Dr. Shahrzad Zarkoob whose passion for wine caused her to after spending the 2007 vintage harvesting in Langudoc and Jura regions of France working for a very talented third generation winemaker, leave her high level executive job at NBC Universal in New York city and start a new journey to become a winemaker. She worked for one of the premier Pinot Noir wineries in north America: Willimas Selyem. I am inviting 10 of my friends to join us on a wine tasting, discovery, and educational weekend.

It is with absolute delight that I invite you to attend a talk delivered by John Osajima* on the Practice of Being a Human Being.

The goal of this practice is to be a simple human being. It's a goal-less goal - because we simply let ourselves be what we are.

As Chogyam Trungpa says: "We are speaking here of the basic goodness of being alive - which does not depend on our accomplishments or fulfilling our desires. We experience glimpses of goodness all the time, but we often fail to acknowledge them. When we see a bright color, we are witnessing our own inherent goodness. When we hear a beautiful sound, we are hearing our own basic goodness."

"When you sit upright but relaxed in the posture of meditation, your heart is naked. Your entire being is exposed - to yourself, first of all, but to others as well. So through the practice of sitting still and following your breath as it goes out and dissolves, you are connecting with your heart. By simply letting yourself be, as your are, you develop genuine sympathy towards yourself."

(Quotes from "Shambhala, The Sacred Path of the Warrior.")

*John Osajima is a senior teacher at the Berkeley Shambhala Center. He is a retired architect. John was the Head Meditation Instructor at Berkeley Shambhala Center for a number of years.

For the last several years he has been conducting weekly meditation classes in a variety of settings, e.g., an Alameda County jail facility, a methadone clinic, and a residential half-way house for women.

In December of 2008 John will be leading a month-long residential meditation program in British Columbia, Canada.

I hope you will enjoy this wonderful speaker.
